The Future Mr. and Mrs. Martin: Part 2

This week I'm lucky enough to have "Fall Break" (and actually don't have to go back to work until tomorrow!). Sarah and Ma Greene decided to throw Steph and Kyle a "Stock the Bar" engagement party this past weekend, so I was beyond excited that I had the time off to drive home for it.

It was so wonderful to see my bahermahs...
(the boys were there, too, but harder to round up for a group picture)

watch the happy couple open gifts...

yell and scream when they found out what was inside...

hang out with Ma Greene...

and get excited to be part of one of the best bridal parties ever.

We can't wait for your big day, bridey!!!

376 days and counting.... :)

The Future Mr. and Mrs. Martin

One of my favorite things about weddings is going to all of the fun events that lead up to the actual wedding. It's a perfect reason to reunite with my favorite people, and I am beyond excited to spend the weekend in Virginia with my high school best friends to celebrate these two lovebirds.

Kyle and Steph were good friends in high school, starting dating (long-distance!) freshman year of college, and have been dating for the past seven years!  They are not only amazing people, but make an absolutely perfect couple.  They will say "I do" on October 20, 2012, and I am so excited and honored to stand by them when they do.

Let the celebrations begin. :)

Something Borrowed, Something Blue

Those are two of my favorite books, but actually not the topic of the post today.  I should have specificed that it's actually...

Something Borrowed Bought at a Yardsale, Something Blue

The Blackburns had a yardsale this past Saturday, so Gaines and I woke up early to check it out.  There were several things for sale, but we instantly loved a hunter green sofa table they were selling.  If you know Mrs. Jeanie (aka Gaines' "udder mudder"), you know how unbelieveably sweet and wonderful she is, and she sold it to us insanely cheap.

We rushed home to find a spot for our new find, and since we already have a piece of furniture behind the couch that is close to the same height, we decided to try it under our picture wall.

I found a lamp I loved at Target later that day and love the warmth (and light!) it adds to the room.

But I desperately need your help! What color should we paint the new table??

*
While I was at Target, I also picked up a simple barstool to add under the paintings in the kitchen.

The regular wood looked too boring, though, so I riffled through our extra buckets of paint and settled on the light blue we painted the guest bedroom and bathroom.

But after staring at it for a couple of days, Gaines and I decided it was too light and blended into the wall too much.  I found some black paint in the closet, printed and cut out a large "S," and then painted the letter and edge of the stool.

I love that it fills the space, adds color, and provides additional seating.

It also kind of matches that new kitchen rug (seen above) that I also grabbed from Target...

Gaines banned me from shopping in Augusta for a while, and I don't really blame him. ;)

Congrats Sammy!

Woohoo! All three Turner kids are officially employed!

Congratulations to my brother Sam, who just landed his first job at Dura-Cast Products, Inc.  He'll move to Orlando, Florida in a couple of weeks and will be communting to work in Lake Wales.  I am so happy for him and know how excited he is about this new chapter in his life.

Not only can I see him and my fabulous cousin Lisa when I visit Orlando, but The Wizarding World of Harry Potter happens to be there, too.  That's what I call killing three birds with one stone. ;)

Master Bathroom: Before and After

The previous owners added on to the master bedroom (thank goodness!) about ten years ago, so everything you see in the picture below is "new," including the extra space in the bedroom, the two closets, and the master bathroom.

Voila!

A little paint and accessories was all this bad boy needed.

I love how the huge glass block winow lets in so much light...

...and how we each have our own sink. ;)

The paint looks very yellow in this picture...I'm not quite sure why?

I'm so sad to say that this concludes the tour of our "two story home." I hope you like it and know you are welcome over any time!!

Master Bedroom: Before and After

Here is our master bedroom "before" new paint and carpet:

And "after:"

The bedding came from Pottery Barn and just about all of the furniture in the room were things we (well, mostly Gaines) already owned. I'd love something above the bed, like a padded headboard or pictures...any ideas?

One of my most favorite wedding gifts was this pillow from Gaines' best friend Jason (who was in our wedding)'s parents.  Not only do the colors match our bedding perfectly, (which was unbeknowst to them at the time), but I absolutely love the starfish, which was sort of our "symbol" of the wedding. It is such a special addition to our room!

Here's another "before" shot from a different angle:

And again the "after" picture.  Hanging above the TV is another great wedding gift from Gaines' cowokers-- a set of pictures that spells S-T-O-R-Y.

The two doors below lead to seperate his and hers closests.  Can you guess which is one is more organized? :)

Oh, and every true bulldog fan needs a monogrammed bulldog bank...

The master bathroom is the last and final stop on the house tour...coming soon!

My sixth graders are such...

I realized I hadn't shared anything about the school year so far and figure now would be a good time to brag on them.  They took their nine weeks exams yesterday, and I was so impressed by their scores.

Wanna take a stab at some of the questions on their exam?

1. Which of the following tests is the least reliable when identifying minerals?
A. Luster
B. Color
C. Streak
D. Hardness

2. What step in the Rock Cycle would be required to change sandstone, a sedimentary rock, into quartzite, a metamorphic rock?
A. Freezing and thawing
B. Weathering and erosion
C. Melting and cooling
D. Heat and pressure

3. Which of the following is true about fossils?
A. Fossils found in the upper layers of sedimentary rock are older than fossils found in the lower layers.
B. Fossils found in the lower layers of sedimentary rock are as old as fossils found in the upper layers.
C. The relative age of fossils cannot be deteremined from their position in sedimentary rock layers.
D. Fossils found in the lower layers of sedimentary rock are older than fossils found in the upper layers.

4. Which process of responsible for soil formation, including sand?
A. Weathering of rocks
B. Melting of magma
C. Pressure on rocks
D. Plate tectonics

5. Why are plant roots important to prevent erosion?
A. Plant roots absorb the water that would otherwise wash away soil.
B. Plant roots build a barrier, preventing rain from reaching soil.
C. Plant roots anchor the soil, preventing wind or water from eroding it.
D. Plant roots take up space, leaving very little soil present to erode.

[Answers at the bottom]

I cannot believe we've already been in school nine weeks...and more so, I cannot believe I'm not thinking, "We've only been in school nine weeks!!!?" like I have the past two years.

Why the change of heart?

Great Kids.
I think a big part of my renewed love for teaching is the fact that we were blessed with a great team.  This year we teach inclusion, which means two of our classes have gifted students and two have special ed students.  In the later two classes, I teach with a para-pro and having that extra set of hands in the classroom is like a God's send.  But overall, our kids just seem more well-behaved and eager to learn, which makes teaching so much more enjoyable.

Great Team.
I am so blessed to work with three co-workers who are not only inspiring teachers, but good friends. We communicate well with one another and have such consistent teaching styles and behavior management skills.  I like to think of us as the sixth grade "dream team." :)

High Expectations.
I teach next to a new teacher and can literally hear her screaming with frustration through the cement walls. I'm embarassed to say I did the exact same thing two years ago.  I didn't necessarily know what I expected of the students, so how could they?  Now, I try to be a "warm demander" as my mentor teacher likes to say.  I'm still "nice," but I have high expectations and won't accept anything less.

Practice, Practice, Practice.
Earth science is new to most sixth graders, since they don't cover much science content at the elementary school.  There are a lot of new vocabulary terms and key concepts to teach, but thankfully the subject is very relatable.  For instance, after we talked about weathering and erosion, we went outside to find evidence of it around the school.  We constantly review information and make connections to new things we're learning.  Thankfully, it seems to be working.

Don't get me wrong, there are days I get frustrated and annoyed with my 76 little bundles of joy, but overall, I am so proud of the progress they have made and am genuinely excited to go to work each day.

Only 135 days left... ;)
